Empirical Rule

The standard is so important because of the following rule that applies to bell-shaped curves (Normal distribution):

68% of the observations are less than one standard deviation away from the average.

95% of the observations are less than two standard deviation away from the average.

If you missed the lecture on Thursday you should read chapter five very carefully.
