Course grading. Regrettably, Stat141 Exam 3 (12/12/07) was not a
highly useful instrument for assessment or grading
(and probably not so good for morale). Here is
what I, Rogosa, did in formulating course grades
for the Registrar. My grading sheet has 3 columns
TH1 TH2 Exam3 and 70 odd rows. I created two
additional columns sum12 (TH1 + TH2) and sum123
(TH1 + TH2 + Exam3). Next to each entry in the
sum12 column I added a letter grade (as indicated
roughly in class 12/6). I repeated that process
for the sum123 column. The grade submitted to the
Registrar was essentially the higher of those two
grades. That is, noone could have their grade
lowered by the results of Exam3. It did turn out
that a handful of students did improve their
course grade as a result of their Exam3 score,
albeit one small grading step.
