Splus and R

The best way to learn Splus is to sit down at the computer with a copy of the Venables and Ripley book, and follow their examples. We will not be using their MASS library. The tutorial below was written by Tao Jiang. You could read it before Venables and Ripley. If you know emacs, you might find it saves you some keystrokes. Otherwise it is probably best to ignore the emacs part of the tutorial.

R is a clone of Splus, available at CRAN

Splus is available on some of the leland system computers. In particular the elaines have it.

Texts and background material

Background material on the t test is here in PostScript and here in PDF The texts are described in the course announcement. The class text is quite sophisticated in its treatment of regression. There is some supplementary material at the Regression Modelling Strategies web site We will be making extensive use of Julian Faraway's freely available book for regression. We will also use some of Harrell's notes: has 3 pages of regression formulas and pages 7 to 16 of these notes have some background on simple linear regression. Save some print quota: Chapter 2 pages 7 to 16 are relevant. Most of the rest duplicates the course text.
