Install R from The R Project for Statistical Computing Note: use R version 2.5.1, released on 2007-06-28. Follow the CRAN (Comprehensive R Archive Network) link on that page for downloads. At CRAN, choose the link for your operating system to install the precompiled binary distribution of the base system. The closest CRAN mirror is Berkeley. Maunals for using R, a useful R Wiki, and a list of frequently asked questions can also be downloaded/browsed from the R Project page. There are a wide variety of resources there, including translations of the R manual. The Wiki lists several R reference cards that can be quite helpful.
Additional Resources include:
An extensive Package Index
The Verzani book is a wonderful companion to the SW text; a preliminary rough draft of the book can be downloaded from the R Project. In addition, supplemental materials for Verzani are available.
Google your R questions.
Introductory guides worthy of note are from Berkeley and from UCLA and from Vanderbilt.
Searchable content of the R mailing list archive -- very helpful when you are really stuck
