Information for Course Instructors

For each of the 14 chapters we have created postscript and pdf files, with one slide per figure in an enlarged format. The captions are included. Here is a sample from chapter 2. Access is limited to course instructors. In order to receive the login/password information, please email textbook@springer-ny.com who will verify that you have adopted the book for your course. Armed with the login/passwd, proceed to the figures directory . You will find a gzipped package allps.zip consisting of all the postscript files (one per chapter), a gzipped package allpdf.zip with all the files in pdf format, and then separate postscript files for each chapter.

These files are for academic course instructors only, to use either with a projection device or to print and make transparencies. They are not to be copied and distributed to others, such as students in the class.

These figure files will improve with time. Currently the "imperfections" (for which I need no notification) are

• Some figures have their captions in smaller font to fit in the page better without sacrificing the artwork size.
• Some figures were just too big; mostly these where the pairs of figures that show the classification maps, arranged one on top of the other. For these we put the first and the caption on one page, and the second on the next page.
